The vastness of the Nevada desert!
This was taken on our recently completed run to Las Vegas.
It is amazing to see how dry and desolate it is out there!
Often we did not see another car for 5 minutes at a time.
Be completely prepared to ride in the summer in the desert before you set out! To run out of gas or have a flat tire during the heat of the day could be fatal!

The LONG ride is over for this year....but one last look back!
One last look back. This picture was taken moments before we got on the bikes and headed out for Las Vegas. Seems like yesterday!
OK...other WMA members......where are your pictures and YOUR STORIES to post?
The Long Awaited FINAL verses of her "Vegas Run" song
Fran's Vegas Run song:
(Oh, I might say that she was influenced by the visit to Dave's farm on the first day!)
"I ride a motorcycle,
I ride my Harley all around,
The wind in my hair,
and not a care,
Wheels going round and round.
British Columbia, thru Washington and Oregon,
into California to Nevada
That's where I'll be gone.
Oh to ride the countryside,
back and forth, up and down
It's the best feeling no doubt
that's what it's all about.
I'll ride with good buddies,
I'll ride with strangers that's alright
If you've been on two wheels
and know how it feels,
there is no ending in site."
Pulling into Carson City
the Wild West of long ago,
temperature's rising and I'm realizing
we're just part of the Show.
We leave for Vegas at the break of dawn
the final destination for this trip.
I'll get to ride the desert for the very first time
as fast as I see fit.
You know the way I see it
life is short, we don't have very much time
so get off your butt and go buy a bike
if riding's on your mind.
Well that's the end of my story
I've just got to go
Who knows maybe we'll keep on riding
All the way to Mexico .

My ride is over - Peter and Fran leave our house for Vancouver, BC (their home)
Will this be the last time I see Peter's bike...a bike with real 'Cachet'.
1999 Harley Super Glide, all black engine.
Peter has kept this bike running like new even though he's up to more than 100,000 kilometers of riding on it..... It sounds fantastic!
There are so many brand new bikes on the road....it's great to see an older bike that looks and runs so well.
I'm trying to convince him to keep it as a second bike. He's thinking he'll buy a new Harley 'Street Bob' upon his return to Vancouver.
Don't trade or sell it Peter...keep it!
I'll miss Fran and Peter...I've spent the last 9 days with them....and even though Peter is a little 'daft', he's a lot of fun to be around....and Fran is a great rider and a great friend also. (by the way, this is one more time I've slipped in a Peter slam in order to see if he's actually reading this, if he calls me on referring to him as 'daft', then I'll consider taking it out.....for the right price).
Joyce and I had a great evening with them last night, and also the night they arrived on their way down to pick me up for the ride.
Dang.....now we're back to normal again.....the ride is over for this year!
The Best Motorcycle Shop in Southern Oregon
"Oregon's Best Motorsports" is the name of a shop in Grant's Pass, Oregon. Aaron is the name of the guy who took my phone call and got me in and out of the shop in record time.
I spent a frustrating Monday with a flat tire (that happened on Sunday). I had my computer and internet access, a Blackberry, and local folks to help, but there is no dang way in heck to get a flat tire fixed in southern Oregon on either a Sunday or a Monday. This point should be pointed out to all buyers of bikes and they should have to sign a waiver that they've been told this.
Anyway....on Tuesday when the world of bike shops was finally opened.....I called a few, including the Honda dealer in Medford, Oregon (my bike is a Honda VTX 1300S). They were cold and indifferent. I've been a loyal Honda guy since switching from Harley a few years ago. But, I'm thinking hard about that loyalty now. When you're away from home, it doesn't seem to carry much weight.
When I called Oregon's Best Motorsports in Grants Pass, Oregon, I was lucky enough to get Aaron(in the picture w. black hat). He was all about being nice, and told me that he'd get me in as soon as I got there. AND.....he did! In and out in roughly 90 minutes. Thank you Aaron....thanks to all at Oregon's Best.....I'll be telling people about you guys for a long time to come.
AND...also BIG KUDO's to the folks at Precision Towing in Rogue River. They were extremely nice and I had a great ride with them in their tow rig from Rogue River to Grant's Pass. Real Pro's also.....that's my bike on their flatbed...nice and safe and tucked right in for the ride.
The last photo.....my bike....with new Metzler tire on back......ready to ride! After 1 1/2 days of living with the flat......this was a site for sore eyes.
Thanks again Aaron.
Rogue River Oregon
We really enjoyed Rogue River. Remember, I was stuck there due to my flat tire (below).
What GREAT luck...to break down here.....what a beautiful little town with amazingly friendly people.....I love Rogue River, Oregon....I LOVE ROGUE RIVER!!!
A walk around town turned up the new Town Mural. You can see us all posing by it.
There's also the mysterious 'road to nowhere', with two lanes in and a large painted 'Thank You' after you make the loop and go back out......great road, great signage....just NOTHING THERE. The funny thing though, was that Peter and Fran just kept walking around....looking.....back and forth.....what WERE they looking for?
Mysterious Oregon.....
Return from Las Vegas ride - Day Three - The Flat Tire Incident
Flat tire - Sunday - Rogue River, Oregon
Sometimes things that start out bad end in a good way. This is one of those stories.
Just south of Rogue River on Day two of our ride back from Las Vegas, I noticed my bike was sort of swaying along instead of running in a straight line. Luckily I decided right away to pull off at the next exit and check it out. I thought my load had shifted. (I carry a lot of stuff when I ride to the trade show, as I need clothes for the ride (all weather gear), and for wearing at the show.
After taking all my luggage off and putting it back in better shape, I saw the VERY flat tire. I immediately reached into my bag and pulled out one of the cans of spray air/fixit gunk. The tire blew right up just like new.......for about 30 miles. I felt the tire going soft and pulled over in Rogue River to check it out. This time it was totally flat and the 'gunk' would not blow it up again.
I spent an hour or so in a parking lot in RRiver assessing the situation and calling everyone I could think of trying to get a solution. But alas, there is NO solution for a flat tire on a Honda in southern Oregon on a Sunday......or as it turned out....on a Monday either!
For some reason every Japanese motorcycle dealer is closed on Sunday and Monday. It doesn't make much sense since most riders are on their bikes on either Saturday or Sunday. It's quite frustrating to have my Harley riding pals with the knowledge that Harley's H.O.G. club would get them towed and taken care of....but NOTHING would save me on that day.
Bad turns to good very quickly!
Then just when things seemed quite hopeless.....we came to the realization that there was a nice hotel 2 blocks from where I was stuck. I was able to pump enough 'gunk' air into the tire to drive slowly over to the hotel.
The Best Western Inn at Rogue River is one of the cleanest, quietest hotels I've ever stayed in. The little town of Rogue River is a gem...........please don't tell everyone you know about it. Let's keep it our little secret.
With the realization that there was absolutely nothing that could be done about the flat on Sunday, it became easy to relax....after all, we couldn't do anything else.
We got two rooms at the hotel, unpacked our bikes...and got cleaned up. We took an hour to shower, and just 'gel' for a bit.
About 6 PM we met up again and decided to go for a little walk around to see what surrounded us.
Rogue River (the city) is right on the Rogue River (you'd sure hope so).
The river is wide and deep and seemingly full of fish (judging by the number of anglers). The town has built up a nice park along the river with benches and is just plain beautiful...and very relaxing.
We spent some time reflecting and then made our way to Karen's Restaurant for dinner, just across the street from the park and less than 100 yds from our hotel.
Now adding to our great experience with the hotel and the little park.....you can add the entire event at Karen's. Great home cookin', very friendly staff, and lots of happy locals....all make for a fun time. The waitresses there were all qualified for a stint on "Saturday Night Live". They were hilarious and apparently get great kicks out of entertaining out of town visitors. We laughed our heads off all throughout the meal as they bantered with one another and us.
Monday morning I got up at 5 AM to get on the internet and try to find ANYBODY that could get me towed and my tire fixed that day. By 10 AM it was apparent that we would not be leaving on Monday from Rogue River, as the odds of getting repaired were not very good.
We decided to lock in the rooms for a second night. On Tuesday all the Japanese motorcycle dealer shops would be open and the options would greatly increase for getting a solution to my flat tire.
We spent the day working from our rooms, and also took a short walk up the road by the river.
Prior to our second night's dinner at Karen's we decided to go sit in the park for awhile. It was so relaxing. There is also a bridge right thru the middle of the city from the main downtown to the other side of the river where we were. The bridge had been built about 5 years earlier to replace a very old bridge. This bridge is a beauty! Peter, Fran and I were very impressed by the way it was built. Somewhere, somebody had built these massive bolts and nuts....maybe 2 feet in diameter....and they were part of the tightening mechanism that kept the cables that support the bridge in a nice tight stable condition. I know...massive bolts and nuts shouldn't qualify for a scenic tour, but they were quite impressive, AND...we had no distractions.....just the river, the park, and the big bolts and nuts.
After our tour of the bridge and park, we headed for Karen's for another round of food and comedy. Peter and Fran are in love with Karen's fried chicken. For me, their swiss cheese and mushroom burger hit the spot just right!
Each night we ate at Karen's we finished with either pie or cake. Their specialty is Big Boy Burgers (we never had one), and Peanut Butter Pie. (we didn't really care for it). However, the cakes and pies (other than the Peanut butter pie), were fantastic.
Chocolate cake, white frosting, and softserve vanilla ice cream on top.......yummmmmy....
Off to the hotel for a relaxing night and undisturbed sleep.
Return from Las Vegas Day One and Two
LEAVING LAS VEGAS:
We left Las Vegas on Saturday morning at 7 AM, the day after our tradeshow ended.
The decision was easy.....leave early and avoid the heat.....leave late and get 'cooked' alive in the Nevada desert.
To anyone every considering riding thru the desert in the summer: a. don't b. get one of those water pouches that keep you cool (strapped to you), c. leave at night.
When it's 100+degrees 'F' /38 degrees 'C' you shouldn't be riding into the desert of southern Nevada. It's NOT FUN! I'm not saying you 'can't do it....I'm saying it WON'T be pleasant..that's all.
So....we left at 7 AM heading north out of Las Vegas on Hwy 95. About 100 miles up is a town called Beatty. We always stop there. They have a great little ice cream/candy store alongside the gas station. An ice cream when you've just rode 100 miles in the heat....is VERY nice!
From Beatty it's about 50 miles farther north to a great place to turn off....hwy 266. 266 is great because it goes up in elevation right away. More elevation = lower temp.
You HAVE to watch out for the free range cattle/bulls on that route...but really nice road.
In a city called Oasis (for a good reason), you hook up with hwy 168 that takes you the rest of the way thru Nevada into California for the first time.....at a city called Big Pine and hwy 395.
Highway 395 North:
Hwy 395 is beautiful as it runs up the high plateau behind Yosemite National Park. This ride is straight and clear, and there are spectacular mountains on one side, pretty meadows with flowers, and lots of horses and cows to look at as you go along.
We stopped at the same restaurant in Bishop, CA as we did on the way down. The one where the little boy got on the bike for a picture. I took another picture (see the one with bikes in front of the restaurant). There's a great big oak tree with a patio built around it in front of the little restaurant. It's called Petite Diner and is on the north end of Bishop. (Not in the main part of town, but in a section north of there with several businesses). We had a wonderful breakfast on the way down, and now lunch was also really good. I had a BLT with Avocado. Ummmmm...
We continued up Hwy 395 going into Nevada and back to California, and then into Nevada again...and finally Carson City and Reno, NV. Carson City deserves a stop. We couldn't. We were aiming to make it to the far north end of Reno that first night.
Highway 395 would be a great ride any time; we enjoyed it from both ways.....going south and then again going north. It's amazing how much different the views are depending on which direction you're heading.
Susanville, CA
Well our plan to stop in Reno was foiled. There are NO hotel/motels as you leave on Hwy 395 north out of Reno. We couldn't believe it...none. So....we gassed up and got some coffee at about 6 PM, and decided to continue to Susanville, CA about 80 miles north.
The ride from Reno to Susanville leads thru high mountain valleys. Surrounded all the way by mountains and tremendous scenery; its quite enjoyable riding 395 north in the early evening.
Unfortunately we pushed it too late. Upon arrival in Susanville there was NO choice for a hotel. The only rooms left were at the Knight's Inn in Susanville. You can guess that when there is only one hotel with rooms left out of probably 25 motels in Susanville...(or anywhere), that the one with rooms left is either really expensive or not a very good place. This one was the latter.
I feel bad. The Chinese man who owns it probably works his tail off to build a business in America. His attitude was very nice. He could speak only rough English. I saw him working early the next room getting ready to change linen in a room. So....stay here if you don't mind a 'rough' room for $49 per night during the summer vacation period. We were just really looking forward to a super clean and quiet room after the LONG day from Las Vegas to Susanville.
There is a picture above of us loading up to leave our Susanville hotel.
North from Susanville to Rogue River, Oregon - Day Two.
We left Susanville early on Sunday morning. It is a very pretty town and I'd love to have the time to drink in the views that surround it in every direction. You immediately go up in elevation from Susanville into high plateaus of the Lassen National Park. Hwy 44 north until you turn onto hwy 89 takes you thru some amazing views of Mt. Lassen and then Mt. Shasta. Along the way you are almost always in the high plateau surrounded by scenes you wish to remember forever.
We stopped for lunch after we hit Interstate 5 just south of Mt. Shasta. The first big town going north on I 5 is Weed, CA. (we gassed there on the way down). We stopped for lunch in Weed at Big D's BBQ diner. (the first exit). I loved my pulled pork sandwich. Peter was unhappy with the 'Baby Back Ribs'. He said they were NOT baby back ribs....too big.
I took a picture of Big D's front and of the three bikes sitting in its parking lot with Mt. Shasta in the background. Say this about Big D's for sure.....eat the pulled pork sandwich, and take your time to enjoy the special view of Mt. Shasta from their front porch dining area.
We finished lunch and headed north on I 5. Even though it's a major highway, the views are great as you are surrounded by snow capped mountains on both sides of the road for some distance as you head up to Southern Oregon.

$18 Margarita's at the Mexican Restaurant in Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas
We will leave at 7 AM tomorrow from our hotel in Las Vegas; the Holiday Inn Express South on Polaris and Russell.
It was a great stay place for us. Our bikes parked right in view out front, and totally away from the loud noise and huge crowds of Las Vegas.
We had a great dinner tonight to celebrate the good business week we just finished and talk about the ride in the morning. The mexican food was fantastic!
HOWEVER.......make sure you are careful with ordering margaritas. The middle size margarita (16 oz) is $18.00 each. Whoa!!!!!!!!
We were shocked when we found out our the margaritas we ordered (2 each) cost SOOOOO MUCH.
Buyer beware!!!!!

Day Three - Bridgeport, CA to Las Vegas
Bridgeport, CA....where we spent Night Two on our trip, is a beautiful little town located in the high plateau's that are on the east side of Yosemite Nat'l Park. The entire area along hwy 395 from Carson City, NV to Bridgeport was fantastic.
We set off from Bridgeport for the final day of the ride to Las Vegas at 8:30 AM, just 30 minutes past our planned AIS (ass in seat) time.
We had decided not to eat breakfast in Bridgeport, but instead to get an early start and stop later.
We ended up eating in this little town called Bishop at the restaurant in the pictures. We had an outside patio seat under a massive tree. The breakfast was the best on the road, and the atmosphere was very relaxing and beautiful. There was a little boy who was quite taken by the bikes and had lots of questions for Peter. He got a chance to sit on the bike for our pictures. He was a refreshing addition to our morning breakfast! Great way to start the day.
We then rode south until we hit the junction with Hwy 168......we took it to the east into Nevada again.
This is undoubtedly one of the best motorcycle rides ever! You go winding up this huge incline to an elevation of 7000+ feet where it's beautiful and also 'cool'......you are surrounded by rock formations and views as you make turn after turn gradually winding your way to the top....we were heading toward the desert and another visit with the 'cool gods' seemed like a great thing, as we knew that ahead of us was some of the hottest riding known to man thru the deserts of southern Nevada. This road then went down a long long decline with twists and turns again into the desert below. Finally we came to the end of the high plateau twisting and turning roads and went down into the desert below.
After another 20 minute ride further on Hwy 168 on the straightest road in the world thru the desert; we turned off on hwy 266 from Oasis, NV. The road went once again up to the high plateau and another 'cool' spot.
While on this road much further along, we turned a corner and under a big set of trees in the shade was one of the biggest bulls I've ever seen. He was solid black and just standing there next to the hwy. You wondered as you slowed to make the turn and drive right past him if he'd decide to charge you any second (like in the bull ring). Further down the road we had to stop for another cow...this time a calf who was just standing in the middle of the highway. (btw: there wasn't much traffic on this remote road).
So....then over the high plateau again and down in the desert one last time. At the end of hwy 266 we made a right hand turn and connected with Hwy 95 for the ride south to Las Vegas.....I highly recommend avoiding this road in the summer....it's VERY HOT! and nothing to see but desert......for ever......and the winds blow steadily; trying to knock you and your bike over as you drive along at 70 mph.
After an ice cream in a small town in the middle of the desert called Beatty, we headed again south on 95. About 75 miles down Hwy 95 we came to the turnoff for hwy 160 which goes up to the high country again thru the town of Pahrump, that road wasn't very exciting until you get to Pahrump. From Pahrump to Las Vegas the road was a beauty! The highway into LV was two lanes for along way, and a beautiful piece of hwy with mountains all around.
As we came over the top of 160 heading into LV we got a brief look at Las Vegas way off in the distance. It was quite beautiful.
When we got into LV the temp skyrocketed to about 110 degrees on the blacktop. WHOA!!!
Way to hot!!! Luckily we only had a few miles to go to our destination...Holiday Inn Express on the far south end LV just across Interstate 15 to the west of Mandalay Bay Hotel.
Whew! Finally...out of that miserable heat again. Hotel, cool, shower, food.....all these good things followed as we ended the trek to LV. I'll pick this up again when we head back to Seattle and Vancouver, BC next Saturday.
Thanks for stopping by.

Day Two of "The Ride to Las Vegas"
We spent the night in Medford,Oregon at the end of Day One. (For Peter and Fran it was day two....as they had ridden to my house in Olympia, Washington from their house in Vancouver, British Columbian the day before).
Great Holiday Inn Express, we love those. Always friendly, clean, great shower, and the ability to eat breakfast when we want without a big formal deal about it.
There's Peter and Fran sitting on their bikes getting ready to pull away from the HI Express.
The picture with Fran sitting on her bike at the stop sign was taken at our first gas stop in Weed, California. Note the archway behind Fran.
The third pic was 50 miles from Susanville, California riding along a very high plateau.
I have to get going, so I'll catch the rest up later.

On the Road to Las Vegas and the trade show!
Miss you Joyce.....wish you were here with us!
This is from our stop the first night on our trip to Las Vegas. Peter and Fran Galea (shown in the motorcycle pics above) came to my house in Olympia, Washington on Friday afternoon from Vancouver, British Columbia. We had a great evening in Olympia with them. Joyce and I always enjoy their visits. On Saturday morning (June 14), Fran, Peter, and I set off for Las Vegas for our big trade show; Infocomm.
These pics are from the first night in Medford, Oregon. When you have to pack for riding, dress clothes for business, computers, etc....there's a lot of bags to deal with.....
The ride down Interstate 5 was uneventful. We had to take a detour in Chehalis, WA due to really bad traffic (never found out the cause of the miles long line). We went on side roads for 20 miles and then got back on the freeway.
We made a detour in Salem, Oregon to visit an old friend Dave Booth who just bought a farm west of the city.
We really enjoyed the ride from Dave's farm to Medford. Southern Oregon is spectactularly beautiful. Hills and valleys, amazing greens and yellows and oranges....of the fields, the flowers and all.
The sun came out after the 'Dave' stop, and it was gorgeous weather the rest of the day. Perfect temp of about 70 degrees.
I have to get ready to head out for today's ride from here to 'possibly' Carson City, Nevada.
I'll put some lyrics in from a Song that came to Fran as we were riding along yesterday. She actually thought of all the words AND remembered them to write them down...so they will go here as the song for our first day of the ride.....Get Fran to sing it to you when you see her!
Fran's Southern Oregon Ride song:
(Oh, I might say that she was influenced by the visit to Dave's farm)
"I ride a motorcycle,
I ride my Harley all around,
The wind in my hair,
and not a care,
Wheels going round and round.
British Columbia, thru Washington and Oregon,
into California to Nevada
That's where I'll be gone.
Oh to ride the countryside,
back and forth, up and down
It's the best feeling no doubt
that's what it's all about.
I'll ride with good buddies,
I'll ride with strangers that's alright
If you've been on two wheels
and know how it feels,
there is no ending in site."

Thanks so much to WMA, aka The "Virtual" Motorcycle Gang member Richard Schlinkert. After learning about Peter Galea's dad in the post 2 below this; Richard sent this:
Bob-Peter’s dad is most likely sitting on a 1942 or 43 Norton 16H WD. It is
a 350cc single cylinder side valve (flathead in US speak) with a springer
front suspension and a hardtail rear with springer seat- one hell of a rough
ride on the roads of the day. It was used mostly as a courier bike (note
the briefcase-like panniers) and often had a pillion seat for a rider seen
in one of the attached photos. They also made a slightly beefier 500cc
single version called the Big 4 that was made to haul a sidecar (called a
“slogger), but I think this is a 16H. The headlight shade was indeed to
keep aircraft from spotting it-it was originally a whole “can” as seen in
the photo below, but the sides were usually cut out by the troops so they
could SEE. Nortons earned the nickname “NotRuns” because Lucas electrics
and lights were never very dependable.
There are still lots of these bikes around today-you can buy many of the
parts needed to keep them going. Tell Peter if he’s interested, we can find
him one stateside….
This is exciting.....and so cool! Thanks so much Peter and Richard. You can see Richard and his amazingly restored Norton just a few posts below this one.
1950 Panhead belongs to WMA Member #110 Tom Woodward

Edward Albert Galea on 'Snorten Norton' - RAF Base in N. Africa. WWII
Hey Bobby - Here is one for your photo gallery - It took a while to find it, but the photo is my Dad in the late 30"s or early 40"s on a Snorten Norton in a clandestine airstrip in Tripoli, North Africa when he was with the RAF - I say clandestine as I showed it to a historian military friend and he said the numbers on the war planes did not match any records.
You'll notice the cover over the headlight so the light did not shine up in the sky as it would give their position away to the enemy above. I'm not a plane guy but I think those are mosquito fighters but not sure??

Hugh lives in Singapore (my favorite).
This is the first picture I've gotten from an Asian based member.
Thanks so much Hugh. We'd all love to hear about riding in Asia....

Click on the picture to blow it up to full screen.
Richard has a fully restored (to original) 750 Norton....wow! I even caught the Norton logo cap.....nice touch!
That is a great looking bike! Richard and I used to work together...now it seems like he just rides......
I'm so jealous! He's been on a week plus long trip....with a bunch of buddies.
See you next week in Las Vegas buddy! Ride Safe! I'm going to need a full report.
Seattle to Las Vegas round trip coming up on Saturday!
I'm making the annual trip to my industry's largest trade show called Infocomm. It's in Las Vegas this year (last year Los Angeles).
This next Friday night, my good friend Peter Galea will arrive with his wife Fran on their bikes. On Saturday morning we will head out for what will be a 3 day ride from Seattle to Las Vegas and then the return of 3 days on a different route.
We haven't mapped out our route yet, but we've made the ride before so the route's are known to us, we just have to make a selection. We'll be looking for you along the way in Southern Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, and probably Idaho as we ride back thru Twin Falls and Boise.
Send me a note if you'd like to ride along all or part of the way!
